Uptime Practice Case Study
As a successor to a previous firm started in 1934, Berthiaume & Berthiaume has grown and expanded and now serves clients with a diverse range of legal needs. In order to surpass the struggles derived from dated operations and lack of flexibility, they turned to Uptime Practice.
We love the ability to have all of our files electronically and shareable among the staff, and this has really increased efficiency. We don’t need to run to storage to dig out files. Everything from the past 11 years is accessible from anywhere.”
Before Uptime Practice
Berthiaume & Berthiaume was growing to a second location and didn’t know how they were going to navigate the in-house network across 2 locations. Would they have to maintain servers in 2 locations? Would they have to purchase software twice, so they could host it on both servers? These questions and more began looming over the practice as they set forth on their expansion.
The Solution
Call it a coincidence, but Uptime engaged Berthiaume & Berthiaume in a sales call around the same time that they were looking to expand. This fortuitous sales call provided the practice with a solution they didn’t know existed — cloud-hosting with Uptime Practice. This gave way to increased flexibility, savings, and efficiency. Although they decided to stick with one location down the road, they kept Uptime Practice, which proved extra useful when the pandemic hit and ever since.
Q&A with Damien Berthiaume
Tell us about your Firm
“We run a small firm, with 3 attorneys, located in Massachusetts. Our general law practice can meet all of the legal needs within the community, including estate planning and elder law, probate and estate administration, residential and commercial real estate, business and corporate law, family law, zoning, land use and landlord/tenant representation. We also provide criminal law defense in the District and Juvenile Courts and civil litigation representation in all Trial Courts.”
What did you use prior to Uptime Practice?
“We used a peer-to-peer network prior to 2012. Around the time, we were opening a second location, which made sense of at the time. This made peer-to-peer networks more difficult and this made us consider the cloud. Rather fortuitously, we responded to a sales call from Uptime back in 2012 to discuss cloud-hosting solutions. We did end up closing our 2nd office right before the pandemic, but we kept the cloud-hosting solution because it allow us to stay nimble for remote work.”
What were the biggest pain points of that system? What made you look for a new solution?
“The second office opening is what really prompted it. The speed of the system increased as we switched to the cloud. Uptime’s servers were better, so it ended up being the better choice overall.”
Ultimately, what made you choose Uptime Practice?
“The timing was perfect because of the second location. Uptime taught us about being cloud-based since we didn’t know or really consider it before. That, combined with the ease of transition and the explanation for the transition, is what made us choose Uptime Practice. Also, we loved the security that came with using Uptime’s servers instead of running our own.”
How has Uptime Practice streamlined or helped your law practice?
“We love the ability to have all of our files electronically and shareable among the staff, and this has really increased efficiency. We don’t need to run to storage to dig out files. Everything from the past 11 years is accessible from anywhere.”
What would you say to another law firm considering Uptime Practice? – What advice or council would you give?
“The transition is very easy and the solution is very easy to use. About a year back, we started using Multi-Factor Authentication with our phones, which increased their security.
Regarding customer service – we had a deadline looming on a brief, and the system just stopped at 1 am. We sent a message then, they responded at 1:15 am, and we were back on at 1:30 am.”
Is there anything else you would like to add?
“In summary, we have been Uptime customers for 11 years. We’re really satisfied with the service. IT outages, costs, etc has decreased as a result.”
